started with an email<\/h2>\n<p>It started with an email from a travel operator.<\/p>\n<p>The type of travel agent which books your travel for you. That takes care of everything.<\/p>\n<p>The email had a great subject line and began with a captivating story about a little piece of history.<\/p>\n<p>It was intriguing because it was different. And very well written.<\/p>\n<p>The text was a little lengthy, but engaging. Remember, you can\u2019t be too long with long copy.<\/p>\n<p>Only too boring.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the email, there was a compelling offer and a clear call to action.<\/p>\n<p>As a marketing piece, it was excellent.<\/p>\n<p>It was also a massive fail.*<\/p>\n<p>Why? Because a) It was sent to the wrong person within the company.<br \/>\nThey never book travel. And had no plans to travel personally in the near future.<\/p>\n<p>And also because b) When they replied to say &#8216;thanks but no thanks&#8217;, they got an \u2018out-of-office\u2019 reply.<\/p>\n<p>Put simply, marketing is about the right <strong>MPT<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe right <em>message<\/em>, to the right <em>people<\/em>, at the right <em>time<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This example was a great message. However, wrong person. Wrong time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSurely the auto-response is no big deal? People are allowed time off, right?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Of course. Not always.<\/p>\n<p>Here are 5 examples of ideas that missed the mark. From companies who know what they\u2019re doing when it comes to marketing their brand.<\/p>\n<h3>Purple Bricks<\/h3>\n<p>Purple Bricks was a massive success in the UK initially. Or thats Harley Davidson shouldn&#8217;t have a wider scope of non-motorcycle products (they sell high heels).<\/p>\n<p>However, the marketing failed, appearing to completely alienate both male and female riders. A perfect storm of circumstances can wash away results.<\/p>\n<p>But what this proves is that we can\u2019t always be 100% certain what marketing will work.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, it\u2019s easy to say after the fact. But beforehand, while the ink\u2019s still wet.
