Especially to a non-technical marketer.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this, Google claim GA4 is more user-friendly.<\/p>\n<p>However, the jury is still out.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps like many things, it\u2019s just a case of &#8216;What you\u2019re used to&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>In any case, GA4 is big on engagement, events, and activity. Which has to be a good thing.<\/p>\n<h2>So why switch to GA4?<\/h2>\n<p>Erm, you kinda have no choice. (Awkward).<\/p>\n<p>OK, we take that back. There is always a choice, of course.<br \/>\nYou can choose not to use Google Analytics.<\/p>\n<p>And try another analytics platform.<\/p>\n<p>But if you want to stick with Google. (And we recommend you do).<\/p>\n<p>Then you\u2019ll need to switch if you haven\u2019t already.<\/p>\n<p>Because this month, the old one went into semi-retirement.<\/p>\n<p>It no longer collects data. And you\u2019ll only have <strong>until July 2024<\/strong> to access the old stuff.<\/p>\n<p>And if you want to keep it beyond then, you\u2019ll need to export it all.<\/p>\n<h2>Why do I need Analytics at all?<\/h2>\n<p>Because better data means<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Well-informed marketing choices<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Improved user experience<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><strong>More leads<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><strong>More conversions<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How do I create my GA4 account?<\/h2>\n<p>Sorry, we agreed no how-to\u2019s on this article. Or at least, if you haven\u2019t done so already, then <strong>right now<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, you can finish reading this. But then, <strong>right now!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In fact, the sooner you create your GA4 property, the better.<\/p>\n<p>Because you can start collecting data that you can use NOW, but also for long-term comparisons.<\/p>\n<p>Plus you\u2019ll have a period of time where you can compare the two data sets and pick out discrepancies.<\/p>\n<p>And there will be some. Because certain things are measured in different ways.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019ll be fun. Like spot the difference.<\/p>\n<h2>How is GA4 different?<\/h2>\n<p>GA4 measures user behaviour with events (instead of page views, sessions and hits).<\/p>\n<p>Everything in GA4 is an &#8216;event&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>There are four different types of event<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Automatically collected events<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Enhanced measurement events<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Recommended events<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><strong>Custom events<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Google allows you to track up to 500. Not that you\u2019ll want to.<\/p>\n<h3>Automatic Events<\/h3>\n<p>Automatic Events include things like <strong>session_start<\/strong>, <strong>first_visit<\/strong>, or <strong>scroll<\/strong>. <a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/analytics\/answer\/9234069?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Here is a full list<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Enhanced Events<\/h3>\n<p>Enhanced Events can be enabled or disabled. Options include things like <strong>search<\/strong>, <strong>checkout<\/strong>, or <strong>file_download<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Recommended Events<\/h3>\n<p>Recommended Events are more tailored to the type of website or app. This list features activities like <strong>login<\/strong>, <strong>refund<\/strong>, or <strong>tutorial_begin<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3>Custom Events<\/h3>\n<p>Custom Events let you collect data that Analytics doesn&#8217;t otherwise collect automatically or recommend. It basically covers &#8216;<strong>everything else<\/strong>\u2019.
