rate<\/strong>&#8216; is calculated by what percentage of folk arrive on your website, and then leave, <strong>before clicking anything else<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The amount of time they spend on that checks your website to find your phone number, sees it on the first page, and then leaves.<\/p>\n<p>Bounce.<\/p>\n<p>But what about if they spend their whole lunch break digesting your content instead of their sandwiches?<\/p>\n<p>Yep. The horror.<\/p>\n<p>Adding enough internal links is a great way to signpost other relevant content that the user may find interesting.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also the main way to hold someone&#8217;s hand through their web journey.<\/p>\n<p>And of course, any opportunity to take action on the site increases the chance of a click. And this is what ultimately improves bounce rate. all-encompassing articles are valuable resources and can be extremely helpful to website visitors at all stages of the purchase funnel.<\/p>\n<p>Or just avid garden hobbyists.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s fine when you have the time to read it all.<\/p>\n<p>But what about when you\u2019re in a rush?<\/p>\n<p>What happens when you just want to get to the bit you\u2019re interested in.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll have experienced this on YouTube videos for sure.<\/p>\n<p>(Who knows, maybe you\u2019re experiencing that now!)<\/p>\n<p>You just want to skip to the relevant part.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why YouTube videos (and search engines for that matter) go out of their way to timestamp the relevant sections.<\/p>\n<p>And you should do the same with your content.<\/p>\n<p>If it\u2019s detailed, and there\u2019s a lot to take in, provide \u2019time stamps\u2019 at the top by way of a table of contents.<\/p>\n<p>This list can provide \u2018anchor articles are different because they recommend relevant content at the end of the post, rather than in the middle.<\/p>\n<p>These are articles that you believe the user might also be interested in, most likely because the subject matter is similar.<\/p>\n<p>Just like \u2018related products\u2019 or \u2018customers also viewed\u2019 on ecommerce sites.<\/p>\n<p>But rather than recommending products, we\u2019re recommending content.<\/p>\n<p>And most blogging platforms will have a simple way to add this feature too.<\/p>\n<p>Often it\u2019s just a simple drag and drop widget.<\/p>\n<p>Categorise your articles using categories or tags, and then simply recommend other articles in the same category.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s such a simple and user-focused way to encourage Or worse, not at all.<\/p>\n<p>And given that search engines also have one eye on these metrics, loading speed is a factor in SEO.<\/p>\n<p>So it\u2019s well worth optimising.<\/p>\n<p>But the most important thing is how fast your site <em>feels<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h4>A word on speed tools<\/h4>\n<p>There are hundreds of online speed tests out there which use various calculations to make assumptions about your site speed.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes this is helpful, but often it\u2019s not the full story.<\/p>\n<p>Work can be done in a myriad of ways to improve how efficiently content can be delivered.<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s not alway picked up by the speed tests.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ll mark you down for not having one thing in place, not knowing that you\u2019ve addressed the issue in a different way.<\/p>\n<p>Be wary of tools than can trick the reporting software into giving you healthy looking numbers.<\/p>\n<p>When behind the scenes, they\u2019ve actually slowed things down.<\/p>\n<p>In one example we saw, a piece of software that changed the method in which your website fonts are delivered improved your test results.<\/p>\n<p>However it also delivers a more clunky on site experience for the user.<\/p>\n<p>Something Google are very hot on at the moment.<\/p>\n<p>Take for instance metrics such as CLS (Cumilative layout shift), part of their Core Web Vitals programme.<\/p>\n<p>They measure how much stuff kind of jumps about the page as it loads.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s damaging. Like a sunbed.<\/p>\n<p>You may look tanned for a bit, but ultimately you\u2019re damaging what\u2019s important.<\/p>\n<h4>So what can I do to help my page load faster?<\/h4>\n<p>Don\u2019t chase green lights on reports. Instead, play with a straight bat.<\/p>\n<p>Analyse your page for opportunities to optimise content delivery in a balanced way.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Compress images<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Why not try <a href=\"https:\/\/tinypng.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tinypng<\/a>. It\u2019s free and helps you compress your image sizes. But also bear in mind your iPhone takes humongous pictures. Making the dimensions the correct size in advance will help big time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Employ a caching strategy<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Using WordPress? Take a look at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wpbeginner.com\/plugins\/best-wordpress-caching-plugins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">these recommendations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Use a decent hosting provider<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cheap hosts are cheap for a reason. If you\u2019re serious about your web presence, then it might be worth an upgrade. Nettl sites are hosted on AWS EC2. That&#8217;s the same infrastructure running famous names like Netflix, Pinterest, Expedia and Amazon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Remove unused plugins and scripts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.webpagetest.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Run a report<\/a> of what is being used in the background to load your page.
