><h2>Google Algorithm Updates<\/h2>\n<p>Did you hear that?<\/p>\n<p>Sounded like a <em>rumble<\/em> in the <em>rankings<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>That could be because Google <em>recently announced a major update, <\/em>or rather a series of updates, to\u00a0their broad core algorithm.<\/p>\n<h2>What\u2019s a core algorithm?<\/h2>\n<p>It&#8217;s the most fundamental part of a magic formula.<\/p>\n<p>A series of complex calculations that decide where your website appears, if at all, in Google&#8217;s search results.<\/p>\n<h2>Is it a big deal?<\/h2>\n<p>Well, maybe. Probably.<\/p>\n<p>You see, Google makes changes all the time (<a href=\"https:\/\/moz.com\/blog\/how-often-does-google-update-its-algorithm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in one year as many as 9 per day on average<\/a>) and they don\u2019t usually say anything.<\/p>\n<p>When they do make a core update, there\u2019s a big announcement. Followed by much commotion and hoo-hah in the Search Engine Marketing circles.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a sure sign the changes are big ones and potentially rather disruptive.<\/p>\n<p>Good or bad? Hard to tell. Maybe indifferent.<\/p>\n<h2>Oh really? A page or two.<\/p>\n<p>Break into the top 3 places and it could be a game changer for your business.<\/p>\n<p>If your motives are in-line with Google\u2019s view of the web-wide-world then by jingo, thou shalt be rewarded.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>For example:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>If, prior to Google\u2019s mobilegeddon update, your site was mobile&#8217;s bff.<\/p>\n<p><em>Then arise, Lord Liquid Layout.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Prior to Google\u2019s Panda update, you might have invested time creating thorough, unique, compelling content.<\/p>\n<p><em>Arise, King of Content.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps if you had your SSL in place before Google\u2019s update to flag non https sites as \u2019not secure\u2019 <em>then arise, Sir Site Security III.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>OK, the last one was not a core update, but you get the message.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s about being <em>prepared<\/em>. And then subsequently rewarded.<\/p>\n<h2>What should I do to prepare?<\/h2>\n<p>The best way to get ready for a core update is to worry <em>less about what Google are doing<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>And more about what <em><strong>you<\/strong><\/em> are doing.<\/p>\n<p>Be less concerned about trying to guess how Google will interpret signals.<\/p>\n<p>And focus more on how to add value to your visitors.<\/p>\n<p>Do you know why?<\/p>\n<h2>Some things never change<\/h2>\n<p>Because, like the cast of Disney\u2019s Frozen once sung, <em>some things never change<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever the update, one fact remains consistent.<\/p>\n<p>The job of the search engine is to <em>always recommend the best sites<\/em> for the user\u2019s query.<\/p>\n<p>So <em><strong>your mission<\/strong><\/em> (if you choose to accept it) is to:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Make sure your site provides the best information or solutions for that query.<\/li>\n<li>Make it easy for Google to recognize this.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>How do I do that?<\/h2>\n<p>How does a Formula One racing team win a championship?<\/p>\n<p>They have the fastest car? One of the best drivers? Possibly. Check-in with Google.<\/h3>\n<p>Put a little time aside to explore Google Analytics and Search Console.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll be able to take a look at the data.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>How many website visitors?<\/li>\n<li>Where did they come from?<\/li>\n<li>What device are they using?<\/li>\n<li>What search terms brought them here?<\/li>\n<li>Where\u2019d they go?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>2. Use other keyword tracking tools<\/h3>\n<p>Specialized tracking tools can monitor performance across a wide range of criteria.<\/p>\n<p>Such as device, location different search engines and even analyzing different user intent.<\/p>\n<p>They will notify you when your rankings change.<\/p>\n<p>And you can have them monitor your competition too.<\/p>\n<p>See how they are performing for the same keywords and key phrases.<\/p>\n<p>If someone has gotten the jump on you following a recent update, it might be worth a deeper dive to investigate why.<\/p>\n<p>There are plenty of other free (and freemium) SERP tracking tools available.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.semrush.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SEMrush<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ahrefs.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">afrefs<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/moz.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moz<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To name just a few.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Just keep swimming<\/h3>\n<p>Ignore the fact that two Disney references in one post is way too much and understand that search-engine-land is a volatile place.<\/p>\n<p>Your website ranking can go up as well as down.<\/p>\n<p>Think of the search landscape as fluid. <em>Forever in motion.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to <em>work consistently<\/em> to improve your offering.<\/p>\n<p>Google once likened core updates to a list of top movies.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>One way to think of how a core update operates is to imagine you made a list of the top 100 movies in 2013. Several years later in 2023, you refresh the list. It\u2019s going to naturally change. Some new and wonderful movies that never existed before will now be candidates for inclusion. You might also reassess some films and realize they deserved a higher place on the list than they had before.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>So what they\u2019re saying is, your website doesn\u2019t need to change for your ranking to change.<\/p>\n<p>Other sites might come up and knock you off your perch.<\/p>\n<p>Or, your offering might be interpreted as offering more value.<\/p>\n<p>But unlike a classic 80s movie like <em>Lost Boys<\/em>, which should get more credit now than it did\u2026<\/p>\n<p>A website that hasn\u2019t changed in a year is less likely to receive accolades.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, that\u2019s only really likely to happen if you improve it.<\/p>\n<p>Work on it. <em>Keep working on it.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Keep swimming and you may reach the surface.<\/p>\n<p>Stop swimming and your site will slowly sink.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>You see, SEO is a little like going to the gym.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Go consistently, work hard. You\u2019ll see results.<\/p>\n<p>Stop going.
